FURTHER DEVELOPMENTS IN N/C SYSTEMS

Two developments in shipbuilding applications of numerical control are discussed. The first concerns the adoption of a standardized system for Dutch shipyards. The NALS-system (Numerical Control Adapted Language for Shipbuilding) consists of a series of computer programs for calculating hydrostatics, stability, wave bending moments, etc, linked together on a data base created by the hull fairing program. The system uses its own geometric-descriptive language which enables draftsmen at the yards to code the internal structural parts of a ship. The computer converts this description into a paper tape which can either be used to draw templates for the optical following flame cutters or can be fed directly into the numerically controlled flame cutter. Another recent development, this time in the field of hardware, is the use of plasma torches on a four-head numerically controlled cutting machine at the Stralsund shipyard on the Baltic in East Germany. This technique is said to have result in a 100 percent increase in productivity in the plate cutting section of the yard.
