CHARACTERISTICS AND FEASIBILITY OF FULL-DEPTH ASPHALT PAVEMENTS

MERKMALE UND MOEGLICHKEITEN DES ASPHALTOBERBAUS

The author stresses the particularly good distribution of loading and stability in full-depth asphalt pavements, and compares these pavements with concrete pavements set directly on cohesive soil. A description is given of advantages during the laying of the mixture and during the sealing of the formation against precipitation. Examples of pavements built in the USA (where there are design recommendations), Finland, France, Denmark, Austria and Switzerland are critically discussed with respect to execution of construction and economic efficiency. Details are given of the measurement programme anticipated for experimental roads in Germany: determination of characteristic values of the soil, the E2 values, testing of the moisture content in the soil by means of neutron sounding apparatus, determination of the heat conduction coefficients of bituminous layers, dynamic bearing capacity measurements. Measurements of settlement with the benkelman beam, and measurements of temperature at various levels. /TRRL/
