WEARING STRENGTH OF BITUMINOUS SURFACINGS
VERSCHLEISSFESTIGKEIT BITUMINOESER FAHRBAHNDECKEN
Since the use of steel studded types was permitted, above average wear has been observed on roads, particularly after the winter season, and this winter damage has been the subject of intensive research, both at home and abroad. One of the first tasks of the fg working group on wear of bituminous surfacings was to determine the part played by other factors, such as de-icing slats. Research work leads one to conclude that although the latter have an effect, the main cause of the damage is mechanical stress (the impact and friction of the studs). As yet insufficient research has been carried out into ways of reducing the damage. It seems certain that dense surfacings such as gussaphalt have more resistance than for example asphaltic concrete. The development of methods and equipment aor a thorough and practical study of wear is been as very important, so that recommendations can be worked out. The need for restricting the maximum speed of vehicles fitted with studded types to 100 km/h is stressed. /TRRL/
