COMPACTION WITH VIBRATING ROLLERS

THIS ARTICLE IS CONCERNED WITH THE DEVELOPMENTS IN THE COMPACTION OF FILL WHICH HAVE LED TO THE MODERN VIBRATORY ROLLER AND WITH THE PRINCIPLES AND PERFORMANCE OF THESE ROLLERS. THE AUTHOR FIRST DISCUSSES HOW THE VIBRATION OF A ROLLER CAN GIVE BETTER COMPACTION AT DEPTH OWING TO THE BREAKDOWN IN FRICTION BETWEEN THE PARTICLES AND THE GREATER IMPACT OF THE ROLLER DUE TO THE HIGH ACCELERATIONS IMPARTED BY THE VIBRATOR UNIT. TESTS CARRIED OUT BY THE NATIONAL SWEDISH GEOTECHNICAL INSTITUTE ARE DESCRIBED, WHICH DEMONSTRATE THE ADVANTAGES OF VIBRATION IN REDUCING FRICTION AND THE WAY IN WHICH VARIATIONS IN AMPLITUDE AND FREQUENCY OF VIBRATION AFFECT COMPACTION. THE WORK ALSO SHOWS HOW THE POTENTIAL IMPACT INCREASES AS THE GROUND BECOMES MORE CONSOLIDATED AND ALTHOUGH AVERAGING 25G CAN BE AS HIGH AS 50G. TWO COMMERCIAL TYPES OF VIBRATORY ROLLER ARE NEXT DISCUSSED, NAMELY THOSE WITH UNRESTRAINED MOVEMENT IN ALL DIRECTIONS AND THOSE IN WHICH THE HORIZONTAL COMPONENTS CANCEL OUT. THE DIFFERENCES IN PERFORMANCE ARE GIVEN, THE MAIN DIFFERENCE BEING THAT THE LATTER TYPE GIVE GREATER COMPACTION AT THE SURFACE, BUT AT THE EXPENSE OF COMPACTION AT DEPTH. THE AUTHOR THEN DISCUSSES THE CHOICE OF MACHINE IN RELATION TO THE CONTRACT, PARTICULARLY IN RELATION TO THE SIZE OF CONTRACT, SPEED OF CONSTRUCTION PLANT AND THE DEPTH OF LIFT.
