UPGRADING INADEQUATE MEDIAN BARRIERS
This article briefly surveys ideas currently in use for incorporating old median barrier elements into the new Safety Shape concrete design. A proposed design from Pennsylvania uses stay-in-place forms of precast concrete. In California, a cut down cable-and-post barrier becomes the reinforcement and base restraint for the concrete barrier. Another modification that has been suggested is the addition of precast Safety Shape barrier face sections to replace the rail and block-out of worn or damage W-beam median barriers. The low, narrow curb median divider in the center of a four-lane roadway may be left in place at the inside base of the concrete barrier.
