THE VELOCITY OF SURFACE RUNOFF ON CATCHMENT AREAS
Details are outlined of an experimental study of the laws governing the surface runoff of a catchment area. A flume equipped with devices for supplying water and adjusting its slope with a screw lift was used, and samples of surface soil were laid in the flume. Samples were taken from turfed slopes, stubble fields, and plowed fields. In each case the surface of the sample was subject to articial leveling or loosening. The data obtained in the study are analyzed and conclusions based on the results are presented. The findings related to the relationship of runoff velocity to the rate of runoff and slope, the laws governing the flow of water over a turfed surface, and the runoff over a lossened readily-erosive surface.
