MOISTURE AND STRENGTH RELATIONSHIPS OF SOILS AS AFFECTED BY 4-TERT. BUTYLPYROCATECHOL
In an effort to understand the basis of the soil-stabilizing role of soil waterproofing agents, the effects were assessed of 4-tert butylpyrocatechol (TBC) on vapor and liquid phase water sorption by cohesive soils, as well as the secondary effects of TBC upon the strength manifested by these soils. The unconfined compressive strengths and moisture contents were determined of cylindrical soil specimens after they had been equilibrated with one or more various relative humidities, and, in some cases after they had been equilibrated in the liquid phase water. The results are discussed, and the effect of TBC waterproofing treatment upon the vapor phase water properties of three soils is illustrated in a graph. The only movement of liquid phase water into a TBC-treated soil was found to occur at the periphery of the soil sample.
