SUPER-FENDERS FOR SUPER-TANKERS
The type of fender most suitable for enlargement is reported to be the pneumatic fender which consists of cylindrical bags filled with low-pressure air. If a bag is compressed, the air pressure increases and design capacity is reached at a compression speed of up to half the diameter of the bag. System was successfully used at Shells crude oil jetties in Tessport, England, and Stavanger, Norway, both of which are built up from caissons placed on a rocky bottom. The fender bags in these ports have a diam of 3.3 m and are 6.5 m long. The absorption capacity to 50 percent compression is 125 ton-m, the reaction force being 204 tons or less than 20 tons/m.
