DURABILITY OF PRESTRESSED CONCRETE STRUCTURES

Details are given of a meeting of the Concrete Society to consider the durability of prestressed concrete. The work of the Durability Commission of the FIP (Federation Internationale de la Precontrainte) was described together with the world-wide survey carried out by the Commission on the durability of prestressed concrete structures. The objectives of the survey are (1) to estimate the number of prestressed structures built, (2) to determine current practice in each country, (3) to assess the number of structures showing signs of deterioration or failure, and (4) to investigate the cause of damage and recommend preventative measures. The survey covered 110,000 structures 400 of which suffered minor incidents, and 31 more serious incidents. Speakers discussed the five Summaries of Work produced by the Durability Commission following the survey, which give recommendations on materials and detail design practise. The meeting was held at the Royal Commonwealth Society on April 5, 1971.
