OBSERVATION OF BOILER ELEMENTS BY NONDESTRUCTIVE METALLOGRAPHY

Spheroidization is the most important structural change produced in ferritic steels by time and temperature. This phenomenon is related to the damage accumulated in the material under service conditions. The presence of spheroidized carbides, after a few hours of service, in steels that originally presented a perlite structure, is a strong indication that the working temperature is above design requirements. Examples are given of the utilization of the replica technique in the inspection of water tubes in a marine boiler and reheater tubes in two power plant boilers. Results are discussed.
