STRESSES AROUND TWO OPENINGS OF GENERAL SHAPE

A general method is presented for determining the stresses around two openings of any shape in a large plate of elastic isotropic material. The method is based on the complex variable approach of Muskhelishvili combined with the Schwarz successive approximation technique. Stresses are computed for the case of a small circular opening near a large square opening. The distance between the edges of the two openings is at least twice the diameter of the circular opening. The results are presented as stress concentration factors in contours of the size ratio of the two openings as a function of the distance between them. Several cases which frequently occur in ship construction are included.
