EXPERIMENTS IN INJURY CONTROL: THE INJURY CONTROL RESEARCH LABORATORY, 1966-1973

The philosophy of operation, accomplishments in injury control research, and methodological achievements during the 7 years of this U. S. Public Health Service laboratory are reviewed. Particular emphasis is given to the advantages and problems in applying the experiemntal method to the development of countermeasures for the personal and environmental hazards that lead to injury. Operating concepts, laboratory technology, and problem definitions are developed from the point of view that accidents occur when the victim fails to anticipate an environmental hazard and that the corrective measures will be found both in modification of the behavior concerned and reduction of the environmental condition that was the immediate cause of injury.
