EXPERIENCE WITH GAP-GRADED AGGREGATES IN RIGID PAVEMENTS IN WEST GERMANY
ERFAHRUNGEN MIT AUSFALLKOERNUNGEN BIEM BETONDECKENBAU IN DER BUNDESREPUBLIK DEUTSCHLAND
The possibility of using gap-graded aggregates mixtures for road concrete was first mentioned in 1952 in the "recommendations for the construction of concrete roads". Since the end of the 1950s concrete pavements having gap-graded aggregates have been constructed in North Germany. Experience has shown that these concretes, apart from having better workability, also have a higher resistance to wear caused by studded tyres than uniformly graded concretes. It is concluded that the selection of gap-graded aggregates is the best way of improving the wearing strength and durability of concrete roads.
