STUDIES OF VISION IN TWILIGHT AFTER INTAKE OF ALCOHOL

UNTERSUCHUNGEN UEBER DAS SEHEN IN DER DAEMMERUNG NACH ALKOHOLAUFNAHME

Twenty nine subjects who had good eyesight were investigated for twilight visual aciuty after they had drunk alcohol; the tests were carried out at various times after the completion of drinking by means of an optometer. With surroundings of 0.10 and 0.03 CD/M2 luminance, twilight visual acuity directly after the completion of drinking is almost 30 percent worse than when the subjects are in a sober condition. Up to one hour after drinking there is high statistical certainty for the deterioration, and when dazzle is present, up to 2 hours after drinking. The greatest differences compared with values obtained from sober people were found during the re-adaptation period after dazzle, but the increase in re-adaptation time differs greatly amongst the individual subjects. Comparisons between the data obtained from the optometer and the blood-alcohol curves show that twilight vision, as is the case with many other psycho-physical reactions, is influenced significantly by the gradual increase in alcohol intake and less by the absolute blood-alcohol value (in the area around 1.0 per mille). The tests clearly showed that under mesoptical conditions, alcohol has an effect on visual acuity.
