LAG REGRESSION MODELS OF THE SPATIAL SPREAD OF HIGHWAY IMPROVEMENTS
This study is an attempt to describe and analyze, using simple methods of linear regression, the dynamic process whereby the highway network of a region has been transformed from a predominantly gravel and earth road system to an extensive network of hard surfaced roads. The highway data are derived from Ontario Department of Highways road maps from 1925 to 1971. Observation of the set of maps shows a striking pattern in the growth of the improved highway network. From these analyses a lag regression model of changing spatial structure has been formulated and estimated. Much more experience at this type of dynamic empirical modeling needs to be acquired, hopefully enriched by new theoretical developments.
