CLEARING THE FREIGHT RATE JUNGLE

The vast volume of freight rates used today makes a confusing, if not impossible, task for a shipper to plan his business. In addition, there is an immense amount of routine paper work that must be handled with each shipment. To attempt to reduce the number of rates and the amount of paper work, the Transportation Data Coordinating Committee was established in 1968. This organization is developing a standard system of commodity, carrier, geographic and customer coding that can be used in a computer system. In addition, the TDCC is working on a simplified waybill-less tariff procedure and shipper- carrier data interchange system.
