WESTINGHOUSE HIGH-POWERED TURBINE PROPULSION PLANTS
The turbine division of Westinghouse Electric Corporation has recently made available steam turbine propulsion units with shaft horse power ranges of 28,000/40,000 SHP and 40,000/55,000 SHP using articulated reduction gears. A thorough description of both high and low pressure turbines is given, including principle design advances, overall dimensions, nozzle block and chamber configuration, methods of radial and axial sealing, and the incorporation of side entry blades. A major consideration was the problem of moisture removal, which is also discussed. The high powered turbines are matched with articulated reduction gears. Overall gear casing dimensions, reduction ratios, method of casing support and the lubricating oil system are described. In addition, condenser characteristics and justification of mounting techniques are stated.
