GEL PERMEATION CHROMATOGRAPHY AS A POSSIBLE METHOD FOR THE ANALYSIS OF TAR/BITUMEN MIXTURES
The method described makes use of the fact that the maximum molecular weight of components of tar is only about 2000 whereas bitumen consists of molecules of much greater complexity. Mixtures of two materials are separated into molecular weight ranges using the technique of gel permeation chromatography. A laboratory-constructed apparatus comprising a 50cm x 1cm glass column packed with gel uses 100mu litres of a 20 per cent solution of the sample in tetrahydrofuran. The eluate is collected in a fraction collector and the solvent is evaporated off and the residue weighted. The analysis takes about 2.5 hours overall. One of the principal disadvantages of the method is that any volatile components may be lost during evaporation. The samples tested were venezuelan middle eastern bitumens. The percentages of tar and bitumen found are compared with actual values and good agreement is obtained. Further work is being carried out to improve the separation between bitumen and low temperature tars.
