PRACTICAL ASPECTS OF THE SABS MARK SCHEME
The author discusses the South African Bureau of Standards'. (SABS) mark in relation to the maintenance of quality of aggregates. He commences by stressing that the scheme is compatible with the marketing of aggregates of a higher quality (and price) and continues by pointing out the way in which the scheme protects the producer and could help to reduce the problems that arise from the large number of different specifications that are provided in South Africa at present. He then discusses the tests that are required, namely those, for water absorption, aggregate crushing value and 100 fines value. The author gives details of the methods that his company use to produce aggregates which which comply with the sabs requirements. Flakiness is limited by the choice of suitable crushing methods and the use of slotted screens. Grading is controlled by the choice of vibrator and the thickness of the bed of aggregate on the screen. Which is dependent on its area, amplitude of vibration and speed. Fines content is controlled by washing. He concludes by discussing the cost of obtaining the mark (fee to SABS, test equipment and quality control costs) and the benefits of the scheme to the producer (prestige, more control over specifications and avoidance of expensive arbitration).
