CHANNEL TUNNEL MACHINERY
This article is concerned with the machinery to be used in the construction of the channel tunnel. The author gives an account of the present state of progress of the project and of the tendering procedure that has been used to find suitable contractors for phase 11. He refers to the requirements of tunnelling manufacturers and discusses the machinery in relation to both phases 11 and 111. This is followed by a discussion of the results of geophysical surveys and of the timing of the project. Its feasability is considered in relation to the requirements of tunnelling machines, and factors such as choice of cutting tool, tunnel lining and the need for pilot drills are discussed in detail. The need for reliability is stressed and the author continues by giving technical data on the machines to be used and discusses pumping systems and the disposal of spoil After a mention of the need for digging with hand tools, the author concludes by discussing the problem of meeting the tunnel in the middle.
