HYDRAULIC METHOD FOR FITTING MARINE PROPELLERS
The advantages of pulling a marine propeller onto a keyless shaft taper by hydraulic means and cold-shrinking it in place over the conventional mechanical methods of fitting and removing propellers are described. The hydraulic method of fitting propellers, which was developed by Messrs Theodor Zeise and Messrs SKF-Schweinfurt, enables propellers to be fitted rapidly and without undue effort. The propeller boss is expanded by hydraulic pressure and is pushed up the shaft taper to a predetermined extent by a hydraulic jack in the form of an annular piston. The propeller is removed in the same way, the boss again being expanded by hydraulic pressure. In a taper joint the propeller will automatically come free when the oil has been distributed over the whole contact area between the propeller and the shaft by means of helical grooves. A computer program has been developed for calculating this hydraulic joint. A knowledge of the coefficients of friction between steel, of which the propeller shaft is made, and the alcunic propeller is also essential if the strength of the joint is to be calculated. A test rig was built to check the calculated results, and in the course of the extensive experiments with this, measurements were made of the tangential stresses on the periphery of the boss and of the strength of the shrink fit. Also described are a series of photo-elastic model investigations. The results show the stress distributions in the circumferential and longitudinal directions in the propeller boss. The many advantages of the hydraulic method of fitting propellers became apparent when the propeller of the Esso Scotia had to be replaced. There were no suitable docking facilities and work had to be carried out afloat.
