ROUNDABOUT CAPACITY
THIS PAPER PRESENTS THE RESULTS OF INVESTIGATIONS CARRIED OUT AT FIVE ROUNDABOUTS, AND SHOWS HOW TRAFFIC BEHAVIOUR IS RELATED TO THE HIGHWAY LAYOUT AT THESE SITES. THE ROUNDABOUTS TO THE NORTH EAST OF LONDON WERE INVESTIGATED AT TIMES OF HEAVY TRAFFIC FLOW USING TIME-LAPSE CINEPHOTOGRAPHY. THE EXPECTED FREQUENCY OF A GAP OF ANY SIZE APPEARING IN A SPECIFIED TRAFFIC STREAM IS PREDICTED. GRAPHS ILLUSTRATE THE GAP ACCEPTANCE CHARACTERISTICS OF THE TRAFFIC AT EACH ENTRANCE TO THE ROUNDABOUTS. AN EMPIRICAL RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE ROUNDABOUT SHAPE AND MEASURED TRAFFIC FLOW PARAMETERS IS DERIVED, FROM WHICH AN ESTIMATE OF THE TRAFFIC CAPACITY OF EACH APPROACH ROAD TO A ROUNDABOUT CAN BE MADE. A SUGGESTED DESIGN METHOD USING THE RESULTS OF THIS SURVEY IS GIVEN.
