METEOROLOGICAL AND INSTRUMENTAL ASPECTS OF MEASURING THE VISIBILITY OF SIGNALISATION AND/OR GUIDANCE SYSTEMS FOR ROAD TRAFFIC ARE DEALT WITH. IT IS HARDLY POSSIBLE TO IMITATE AN AVERAGE OBSERVER, BUT AN INSTRUMENT HAS SOME IMPORTANT ADVANTAGES BECAUSE OF ITS OBJECTIVENESS. EXTINCTION TRANSMISSOMETERS AND WIDE ANGLE SCATTERING INSTRUMENTS ARE MOST SUITABLE FOR MEASURING. IN TRANSLATING THE EXTINCTION VALUE INTO USABLE DATA FROM A TRAFFIC ENGINEERING POINT OF VIEW DIFFERENT FACTORS HAVE TO BE TAKEN INTO ACCOUNT: REPRESENTATIVENESS OF THE MEASUREMENT, AVAILABLE SIGNALLING OR LIGHTING, DIFFERENCES BETWEEN DAY, NIGHT, DUSK, ETC.
