THE NEED FOR SUCH CONTROL SYSTEMS IS OUTLINED. A COMPARISON OF SIGNAL PLAN GENERATION AND SIGNAL PLAN SELECTION SYSTEMS IS MADE, AND HARDWARE SUB-SYSTEMS ARE DISCUSSED. THE BRITISH MOTORWAY CONTROL SYSTEM IS DESCRIBED, AND SOME COMMENTS MADE ON THE PROBABLE FUTURE DEVELOPMENT OF AREA TRAFFIC CONTROL SYSTEMS. (A)
