FACTORS AFFECTING THE DESIGN OF ROAD PAVEMENT MESSAGES
Four experiments were carried out to investigate the effects of letter height, word order and spacing between words on the perception of pavement messages. Experimental data on the relationship between letter height and recognition threshold agree well with a theoretical model, and an equation is given which may be used to calculate necessary letter height for any desired threshold reading distance. It appears that word order is unimportant, and that there is no need for words to be placed more than one letter height apart.
