WASTE-TREATMENT SYSTEM FOR SHIPS PROBLEM ON SHORE
General Electric has developed a treatment system for sewage. The new system will: 1) meet secondary standards, 2) be auto/semiautomatic and be maintained electromagnetically, 3) operate with fresh, brackish or salt water, 4) operate under pitch and roll, 5) be incapable of becoming poisoned. The system, operated by electrocoagulation, will treat most shipboard wastes. This electric process steps up the settling of the wastes and produces 90 percent clear water and solid wastes which are subsequently incinerated. As installed in a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers dredge, the system now costs $228,000 (1970).
