THE INFLUENCE OF ALCOHOL IN HIT-AND-RUN ACCIDENTS

In an evaluation of 1691 police files relating to hit-and-run accidents which occurred between 1.12.68 and 30.11.69, the following basic resutls were obtained: in more than a third of all cases hit-and-run drivers were under the influence of alcohol, and in more than half of all accidents involving drunken drivers, hit-and-run behavior took place the proportion of women hit-and-run offenders is significantly higher than would be expected from their total accident involvement, but in the case of women, not even 1 in 5 is under the influence of alcohol. More than 10 percent of hig-and-run drivers did not have a valid driving licence, and in the case of the offenders under the influence of alcohol. A good fifth were not in possession of a driving licence. According to their own statements, drunken drivers who run away from accidents are ten times more likely to have been previously convicted for drunken driving than are sober drivers. Accidents involving drunken hit-and-run drivers are generally more severe than those involving sober hit-and-run drivers. /TRRL/
