LAYER THICKNESS AND COMPATION CONTROL IN FLEXIBLE PAVEMENT CONSTRUCTION

Maintenance of specified layer thicknesses and adequate and uniform compaction are basic requirements for long pavement life. If the specified properties are not maintained, specification TV bit 7 prescribes specific operations. This means that these properties must be accurately established, so that there are no wrong consequences. The control tests have to be carried out by means of statistical samples which enable the performance to be determined. For the establishment of the layer thicknesses and compaction comparative tests with various methods of measurement are illustrated, and recommendations are derived from these for the execution of the control tests. Of the recent developments, particular mention is made of the non-destructive, electro-magnetic method of measuring thickness. For the non-destructive control of compaction basic methods are available; these cannot however be used generally since more basic investigations are necessary and the existing equipment has to be modified. Because of the deviations in the measured values caused by laying and testing, in the future a statistical evaluation and /TRRL/
