RELATIVE ACCIDENT INVOLVEMENT AND RELATIVE DAMAGE OF PASSENGER CARS IN TOWNS

Relative accident involvement (being the cause of an accident) is very different in urban traffic with individual vehicle models. Relative accident involvement in urban traffic increases with increasing engine capacity. Most of the relative damage occurs with the so-called medium-class cars, and considerable differences are found between the same types of vehicles. Vehicle types Opel Rekord 150/1700, Ford 15/17 M and DKW F 11/F had an unusually high accident involvement in 1970 in Mainz, and above-average damage. It is likely that the same vehicles had different involvement in rural traffic. The differences which occur with models made by the same firm can be illustrated by the example of two Opel Models: Opel Kadett-relative accident involvement 1.94, and relative damage 0.96; Opel Rekord (1500/1700)- relative accident involvement 5.55, and relative damage 2.01. On the whole BMW cars seem to have the best record, and Ford cars the worst. /TRRL/
