VEGETATION ON ROADS AND MOTORWAYS. ITS ROLE, IMPORTANCE, TECHNICAL PROBLEM
LA VEGETATION SUR LES ROUTES ET AUTOROUTES. ROLE-IMPORTANCE-PROBLEMS TECHNIQUES
This article reviews the problems associated with vegetation along highways and motorways. After recalling the characteristics of various types of vegetation and their limitation specific to highways and motorways, the author shows the necessity of vegetation and its numerous and beneficial roles: protection against the effects of rain (erosion, slope instability, run-off), wind, snow, sun and noise, optical guidance and anti-glare effect, aesthetic improvement and adaptation of the landscape. The economic aspects of vegetation as regards planting and maintenance are considered, and some examples given. Further ecological research particularly into seeding without top soil and agricultural processes (mowing, fertilizing, selective weed killing, etc.) is recommended. /TRRL/
