COMPRESSIVE STRENGTH - MORE DOUBT THAN CERTAINTY
DRUKSTERKTE - MEER TWIJFEL DAN SEKERHEID
In actual practice the strength of concrete is interpreted as the breaking load of a given test piece which is tested under standard conditions. However, the extent of the strength measured is influenced by a number of variables such as form and dimensions of the test piece, the circumstances in which testing is carried out, the speed at which pressure is applied, humidity, and temperature. Investigations have demonstrated that the strength of concrete in a construction may differ considerably from the strength measured in test cubes. Therefore one must bear in mind the relative value of compressive strength data obtained from test cubes. The present article deals with the variables in question; an important part of the article is devoted to the apparatus used in testing specimens that is to say, chiefly test benches. The controlling of these test benches is a further subject to which detailed attention is given. The reference test in use at present is discussed in the article. Here, identical test cubes are subjected to various influences on the test bench to be investigated as well as on a reference test bench which is heavily over-dimensioned. Lastly, reference is made to the working party on "Testing Apparatus" created by the concrete association; this working party is concerned with the study of the problems mentioned.
