ASPHALTIC CONCRETES CONTAINING EMULSIFIED ASPHALT. DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTIVE TECHNIQUES
HORMIGONES ASFALTICOS ELABORADOS CON EMULSIONES BITUMINOSAS. PROYECTO Y TECNICAS CONSTRUCTIVAS
The properties of asphaltic mixtures, manufactured with slow setting emulsified asphalt, are directly influenced by aggregate grading, moisture content of the mixture, percentage of emulsion and compaction conditions. These variables are studies, and specifications are proposed for the correct proportioning, compaction and quality measurements of the mixtures. A table is included with coefficients showing aggregate grading, to permit the determination of the optimum water percentage in mixtures made with local materials (granite, quartzite and siliceous aggregates). The percentage of residual moisture necessary for good compaction is established. The article emphasizes the economic and construction advantages of the above mixtures, in particular: A) Their plasticity during transport and handling; B) Their easy mixing with cold and wet aggregates. The disadvantages of these mixtures are also discussed.
