The Italian State Railways' new locomotive building program includes two six-axle types for heavy trains on the future intercity express service. The author describes the basic planning considerations and design of the E 666 Co'Co' 200 kph locomotive and also the E656 Bo'Bo'Bo' locomotives for 160 kph developed from existing types.
