LAKES SHIPPERS CHIP OUT A LONGER SEASON

The winter of 1970-71 saw some successful efforts in the direction of extending the shipping season on the Great Lakes. The possibility of future year-round navigation promises substantial financial gains in numerous spheres. Numerous problems are besetting NEWS (Navigation Extension Winter Service) in its project to extend the Lakes shipping season. Discussed are such problems as insurance rates, lock operations, extended Coast Guard duties, political considerations, opposition from Eastern and Southern port interests, and technological problems. The actual battling of ice is being tried with Finnish methods using bow propellers, air jets, trim conditions and bubble-producing machines. The basic idea of the article is, however, to discuss the monetary obstacles and rewards to shippers, steel companies, iron ore suppliers, and the midcontinent region as a whole.
