MARINE INERT GAS SYSTEMS
With the increasing size and complexity of tankers for oil and other hydrocarbon compounds, a corresponding range of inert gas plants has been developed. Inert gas has three main applications, viz: to fill the void spaces in the cargo tanks which carry crude oil or other liquids of relatively low volatility and thus prevent any possiblity of an inflammable mixture being formed in the tanks; to purge the cargo tanks of inflammable vapor prior to the admission of air into the tanks for purposes of tank inspection, maintenance, etc; and to purge tank insulation. The specifications for the chemical composition of a general purpose-, and higher quality inert gas are given. Block diagrams of an arrangement of an inert gas plant on board of a tanker is shown and the design of a scrubber is discussed. Schematic diagram of an oil-fired, marine inert gas generator as well as of a drying plant for low or high pressure systems are shown.
