EXPLOSIVE ANCHORS FOR SEA MOORING
Problems of sea mooring are discussed in regard to a) metal corrosion, b) weight, c) complexity. Corrosion problem is analyzed from previous anode solution viewpoint. Permanent anchor holding problems are considered with examples given. Problems of the drill in pile which requires a hole drilled for the pile and allows bedrock to be the supporting material are included. Cost effectiveness is poor. Design problems are discussed, with two types of solution being given: (1) simplicity of design is the key to low cost, and (2) a new solution is the use of holding material strength, such as bedrock or the high density material underneath the ocean floor. The explosive sea anchor is discussed, including measurements, stress statistics, and pull out loads. Two graphs illustrate the relationships between the size of the explosive charge and pull-out capacity and anchor diameter in mediums of water and air. Land applications and permanent sea mooring operations are described, using trigger mechanisms. Requirements of the future and potential of the explosive anchor are covered.
