THYRISTOR DRIVES WITH DC MOTORS FOR 1000-TPH CLAM-SHELL BUCKET ORE UNLOADERS
Several years ago, Alcan undertook a port expansion program at Port Alfred, Quebec,in anticipation of the larger ships that would be docking there in the near future. This program necessitated the purchase of two 1000-tph bucket-type unloaders. Because bucket-type unloaders of this capacity require precise and rapid response of the bucket and trolley motions for optimum unloader operation, it was extremely important to select a compatible drive and control system. A study was made of the various drive systems available for this purpose, including the following: conventional wound rotor motors with magnetic contactors; wound rotor motors with thyristor control; Ward-Leonard System and DC motors; and thyristor-controlled DC motors. The study showed that any of the four systems could be used if designed properly; however, the thyristor-controlled DC motor system possessed several technical advantages over the other systems, including an economic one.
