STUDY OF PROTECTIVE COATINGS IN A TROPICAL MARINE ENVIRONMENT
Forty-eight buoys or cans used on the Pacific side approach to the Panama Canal were sandblasted and coated with a variety of protective coatings. The buoys were then exposed to brackish water (near lock gates and inner harbor), sheltered sea (protected by breakwall), and open sea. Of the 48 buoys coated, 40 completed 2 1/2 yr exposure before being removed. Results of exposure which were determined by visual inspection are discussed in practical terms. It has been shown that several systems offer at least 2 1/2 yr protection and probably three or more years protection with very little maintenance repair work required. Epoxy red lead-epoxy enamel, catalyzed phenolic primer and enamel, and vinyl red lead-epoxy enamel-three systems were outstanding for deck and other splash zone service.
