BRAVE NEW WORLD OF TOC AND TOD
The BOD test for waste water pollution requires a long incubation period (greater than or equal to 5 d) and is subject to significant error. The COD analysis can be performed in 2-3 hr, still too long for control experiments. Neither test is effective for all organic chemicals. Catalytic oxidation shows no rigorous correlation with BOD but does strongly indicate the possibility of a high BOD value. The TOC method is based on the rapid, automatic measurement of the amount of O used to combust the impurities in the water sample. It provides a quantitative measure of the O demand of the sample. The TOD represents a better overall measurement for oxidizable matter. Typical applications of C analyzers, including special TOC and TOD instruments are discussed.
