LATEST TRENDS IN MARINE ROPE TECHNOLOGY
It is proposed that the choice (and design if a new construction is required) of ropes for a new vessel could and should be made when the design of the winches and deck equipment is being undertaken. Recent factors affecting rope technology are described as-larger and faster vessels with fewer crew members, new types of synthetic fibers, new designs for capstans and winches, containerization, and preslinging. Developments in ropes of wire, fiber and combined construction are summarized.
