DAVID BROWN REDUCTION GEARS FOR MEDIUM-SPEED DIESELS
David Brown Gear Industries has re-entered the merchant ship market with a rationalized range of single and twin-input gears for from 3000 to 36,000 transmitted hp. Initially four models are being introduced-twin-input horizontally offset; single-input horizontally offset; single-input vertically offset and single-input coaxial. Provision is made to accommodate minor differences in primary shaft center distances to suit the now considerable number of engines available. These gears have been designed for input speeds of up to 550-rpm and outputs between 90 and 180-rpm. They are suitable for direct-reversing engines and unirotational engines driving cp propellers. Single helical gears of low helix angle and adequate tooth overlap are used throughout the range. David Brown use a computer at Huddersfield to aid design by indicating the optimum gear specification to meet a specified power and input/output speeds. It is also used to assist in costing, tendering and drawing up materials lists and manufacturing schedules. Details are given for major design features, materials used, and sizes available.
