ECONOMICS OF FREIGHT CARS WITH CHARACTERISTICS APPROACHING THE LIMITS OF ACCEPTABLE DESIGNS
This report is intended to investigate the economic impact of operating specialized freight cars of unusual design having relatively high gross weights, relatively high axle loadings, multiple trucks, articulated couplings, excess width and/or unusual length. There can be effects on switching operations, train operations, maintenance of way and structures facility requirements and competition in transportation markets. This report does not offer quantitative solutions to the problems inherent in the operation of cars with characteristics approaching design limits, but rather outlines what those limitations are and suggests some of the conditions that can develop.
