STIRLING ENGINE AS A PRIME MOVER

United Stirling (Sweden) A/B, at Malmo, Sweden, a subsidiary of the Kockums group, has obtained a license for the development and construction of the Phillips Stirling engine. Laboratory work is based on a unit having an output of 50 bhp/cyl which would cover most requirements for propulsion duties in smaller ships and electrical generating duties in larger vessels. The Stirling cycle is reviewed, and recent developments in the engine are described, including the rhombic drive. General design characteristics of the United Stirling version are given, with some of the experimental results as to efficiency, exhaust gas analysis, noise and vibration, and wear.
