CAPACITY OF ENTRY RAMPS AT INTERCHANGES
LEISTUNGSFAEHIGKEIT VON EINFAHRTEN PLANFREIER KNOTENPUNKTE
The purpose of this research was to qualify the construciton- and traffic-depandent influences on the quality of the flow of traffic in the area of entry ramps by means of observations and measurements of traffic and to determine the capacity of entry ramps at grade-separated interchanges. The capacity of entry ramps influences the planning of an interchange systems, the ramp design and the investment costs. The research was to determine improvement and ranges for standard interchanges. A 30 channel time recorder was used to measure speed and traffic volume for 3 main types of entry ramps: Type I: direct entry without acceleration lane; Type 2: entry with one or two lane ramp; Type 3: acceleration lane merging into normal traffic lane. The research results are stated in 8 points: type III increases capacity of the entry ramp and improves traffic quality and safety considerably, type II has some advantages, type I is not recommended.
