PURPOSE-BUILT PRODUCTS TANKER FOR BRITISH COLUMBIA
The 4500-t dw Imperial Skeena was designed with special features for supplying oil products to the small and sometimes remote settlements up the British Columbian coastline. To accept twin propulsion, an unusual hull form has been developed, a bow form of bulbous configuration, and a stern designed to optimize propulsion efficiency without excessive resistance. With the wide beam required, it was considered that separation could be virtually avoided by adopting buttock flow between the screws and a conventional hull form outside of the shaft center line. The hull between the shafts was designed as a simple flume of rectangular cross section with radiused corners. With a very wide beam (a L/B ratio of 5.5) there are also advantages in machinery layout. The high degree of manueverability required in confined waters has been achieved by means of two completely independent rudders and a bow thruster. In addition to normal bulk work, Imperial Skeena is equipped to carry 70t of packaged petroleum products in drums and in small standard containers. Principal particulars are given, with details of cargo facilities and machinery.
