AIRCRAFT GAS TURBINES FOR HOVERCRAFT AND HYDROFOILS
One of the Rolls-Royce range of marine gas turbines which has been fully adapted for use in a salt-laden atmosphere is the marine Tyne. Its early use in hydrofoil craft has been followed by its installation in large warships, and development is continuing on this engine for new hovercraft and hydrofoil designs. Apart from difficulties with the high-speed transmission shaft and gearbox, and also with engine enclosure ventilation, all now overcome, the small amount of technical trouble experienced gives every encouragement that the Tyne will be a most successful engine in service.
