U.S. PORTS PUT EMPHASIS ON CONTAINER HANDLING

The emphasis in port expansion activities in the U.S. continues to be in the area of container handling facilities and equipment. Many U.S. ports are continuing or are planning to spend millions of dollars in building new terminals and containership berths and storage areas and to erect large cranes specifically to handle their rising container trade. Some U.S. ports also are building facilities to handle other types of specialzied cargo ships, such as roll-on/roll-off and LASH and SEABEE vessels. What follows is a review of cargo facilities recently completed, planned or underway at the following U.S. ports: New York; New Orleans; Houston; Norfolk; Newport News; Portsmouth; Baltimore; Boston; Long Beach; South Carolina ports and Buffalo.
