The application of crowdsourced data in road condition assessment
In this report the authors assess the possible use of crowdsourced data from vehicle telemetry and mobile phones for managing the condition of England’s Strategic Road Network (SRN). A case study showed how crowdsourced data can be used to assess road conditions, complementing current data sources. The authors concluded that crowdsourced data provides applicable information for road condition management. A greater level of detail in the data could improve understanding of pavement conditions, and could also improve the assessment of road safety. This includes identification of high-risk road sections, and decision support on where countermeasures are needed.
