METERING OF ELASTRA SYNTHETIC RUBBER LATEX IN RUBBERIZED ASPHALT PAVEMENTS LAYDOWN

This is a preprint of a paper presented at the International Symposium on the Use of Rubber in Asphalt Pavements, Salt Lake City, Utah, May 1971. A system of synthetic latex metering for use in the preparation of asphalt concrete containing synthetic rubber is presented. The asphalt concrete with synthetic rubber is obtained by the direct spraying of the synthetic latex in a mixing plant for asphalt aggregates. The metering equipment consists basically of a device for weighting the latex and of a special system for the direct spraying of pre-measured quantities of latex indise the mixer by means of a pipe with nozzles. Introduction of the latex into the unit is effected by gravity, by pumping, or by pressure. It has been shown by an analysis of the synthetic rubber contained in the asphalt concrete that rubber distribution in the resulting mixture is homogeneous.
