PRE-1980 DEVELOPMENTS AFFECTING THE POST-1980 ATC SITUATION
This paper will consider only air-derived functions that would have considerable positive or negative interaction with likely solutions for the ATC problem of the 1980-1990 period. These especially include the existing airborne stationkeeping equipment used in airline-like USAF transport aircraft operations, and the almost certain introduction of CAS in air-carrier and busines-jet aircraft before 1975. The implementation of STOL operation, especially in the northeast corridor, is possible around 1975. There is a need for conducting such operations off the present Victor airlanes. Automatic digital data transmission and satellite communication may also become operational realities before 1980. Stationkeeping and air-derived collision avoidance should be of considerable assistance in the efficient improvement of the ATC system through new capabilities becoming available in the course of their implementation. It is a purpose of this paper to identify such areas of mutual assistance and to propose their further investigation.
